So You Wanna be a Writer…

posted in: Various Musings | 2

Over the past few years, I’ve had my fair share of aspiring and up-and-coming authors ask me dozens of questions—not just creative writing type questions but also questions about the publishing process, marketing, and more. I am by no means an expert on most of those topics, but I am always willing to share what I do know. I thought it might be a great idea to offer that info on a regular basis here on my blog—so if you do have questions for me, just let me know!

Let me tell you what I am a bit of an expert about. I have an MFA—a Master of Fine Arts degree—in Creative Writing, but I was a writer long before that. I earned the degree with the intention of teaching creative writing, and I have done so at the community college level in a number of classes as well as privately. I also have an MA (Master of Arts) in English (and even a BA in English with an emphasis in literature)…and so I have taught academic writing for a number of years as well. I give you these credentials to let you know that not only is writing a passion, but so is teaching writing…and I’m pretty damn good at the teaching part, even if I say so myself.

One last thing…I even wrote and published a book in 2015 full of tips and advice in regard to self-published authors and what they can do to make their own fiction better. It’s an ebook called Indie Writer Companion, and it sells for 99 cents at most online bookstores.

Anyway, the plan is to begin blogging about some aspect of indie or creative writing, and I’ll do that every Saturday. I’ll glean topics by looking through past emails and messages I’ve received from people with questions as well as glancing through my book, but please don’t hesitate to comment here to let me know what topics you want me to discuss—it can be something having to do with creative writing in general, from starting the writing process through editing and revision, or it can be about publishing, etc. You name it. I’ll do my best to answer any and all questions! If not, as I said, I’ll glean questions from the past and expand on them here, so stay tuned and sit tight!

How do you write effective dialogue? What I write sounds better in my head than it does on paper. Also, how do you stick to a writing schedule? I find it hard to make time to write on top of working full time. Many thanks in advance!

Carrie, these are amazing questions! Thank you for asking. If you don’t mind, I will tackle these questions in the future blog posts so I can give you well-thought-out answers. 🙂
